For the last couple of weeks, we’ve been reviewing the Supreme Court’s experience with criminal cases, beginning with the years 1990 through 2005. This week, we begin our trip through the Supreme Court’s criminal docket.

As we discussed two weeks ago, the First District accounted for 16.12% of the state’s population in 1990. The Court decided thirty-five cases from the First District out of a total criminal caseload of 262 – 13.36% of the Court’s total caseload. The Court decided two cases from Division One in 1996 and one in 1997, 1998 and 1999. The Court decided three cases from Division Two in 1996 and one each in 1995, 1997 and 1999. The Court decided six cases from Division Three in 1999, two in 1994 and one per year each year from 1995 through 1998. The Court decided three cases from Division Five in 1995 and one per year in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 1999.

The Court decided fifty cases in all from Los Angeles’ Second District. The Court decided two cases from Division One in 1994 and 1998 and one each year from 1995 through 1997 and in 1999. The Court decided two cases from Division Two in 1999 and one per year in 1994 and 1996-1998. The Court decided two cases from Division Three in 1999 and one cases per year 1994-1997. The Court decided three cases from Division Four in 1999, two in 1998 and one in 1997. The Court decided three cases from Division Five in 1998, two in 1997 and one in 1995. The Court decided four cases from Division Six in 1999, three in 1995 and one per year in 1996 and 1998. The Court decided three cases from Division Seven in 1999, two in 1996 and 1998 and one per year in 1994 and 1995. The Court decided no cases from Division Eight of the Second District.

The Court decided three cases from Division Three in 1994 and 1999, two in 1997 and one in 1995 and 1998. The Court decided forty-eight cases from San Diego’s Fourth District in these years. The Court decided seven cases from Division One of the Fourth District, four in 1996, two in 1998 and one per year in 1997 and 1999. The Court decided four cases per year from Division Two in 1994 and 1998, two in 1997 and 1999 and one per year in 1995 and 1996. The Court decided six cases per year from Division Three in 1997, four in 1994, three in 1999 and two per year in 1994 and 1998. The Court decided three cases per year 1994-1996, and two per year 1997-1999. The Court decided six cases from the Sixth District in 1995, five in 1996, four in 1994 and 1997, three in 1999 and one in 1998.

The Court decided eighteen direct appeals in 1998, seventeen in 1995, sixteen in 1997, fourteen in 1996, ten in 1999 and eight in 1994. The Court decided one criminal case within its original jurisdiction in 1995. The Court decided three cases from the State Bar Court in 1995 and one in 1998.
